Tools For Transformation Newsletter™ One Year On

Just over a year ago I felt a feeling deep in my heart that I should write about Emotional Intelligence and that’s how the Tools for Transformation Newsletter™ was born. I want to thank every single reader for their interest and feedback.

My idea was to produce “bite size” tips and insights that would help people increase their Emotional Intelligence and keep them up to date on breaking news about Galba Bright & Associates.

Writing regularly is both a great responsibility and a fantastic privilege.

Even though I am “the writer,” last year’s Newsletters are the result of the energy, interest and commitment of a team of people, including readers, who made comments and asked questions, people that I “met” via radio interviews, people who took part in my Learning Programmes, my brother in Germany, who edited the issues against impossible schedules and other bloggers.

Adrian Savage over at his Slow Leadership Blog expressed it perfectly.

“Most of what we have in life hasn’t been earned. We were given it by someone else. Our life itself is a gift. No one can be born without parents, and even if they’re not always what we would wish them to be, the fact remains they gave us life. Even our success at work is rarely due entirely to our own efforts. Someone has to provide us with office space, desk, computer and other basic services. It’s fashionable to ignore this, and make fun of the “backroom types” who keep our world running, but that doesn’t make it right.”

He challenges the notion that we are self-made:

“How much of what you are today is due solely to your own efforts? Not your birth, not your clothes, not your food, not your education, or even your ability to speak and write and read your native language. People taught you how to do your job. Others helped you win promotion and made your income and standard of living possible. Still others made the car you drive and the house you live in. Are you “self-made?” Don’t be ridiculous. It’s not possible.”

Adrian’s argument resonates with my experience of writing the Tools for Transformation Newsletter™.

The Emotional Intelligence books teach us that we are wired to connect with others and that our emotions are contagious.

This blog gives you the opportunity to engage with the Newsletter, by posting your comments, feedback and ideas. What you say will strongly influence where Tools for Transformation™ goes in 2007. So let me ask you.

How would you like to engage with the Tools for Transformation Newsletter™ ?

Is there an EQ topic that you would like me to write about?

Great questions here, Galba, and thanks for asking your readers what they’d like to read here:-)

It’s a terrific blog to visit and I would like to hear real stories about how EQ impacts your own workplace, as well as how it can change and benefit an entire community - as you see it rolled out practically.

Thanks for the opportunity to share this - an interesting site with even much more to share in the coming year, I sense.

    Hello Ellen:

First, let me thank you for being an active participant in this blog. It’s great that you say want you’d like to see. It gives me great guidance as to where I need to put my energy to meeet your needs.

Simply put, I try to live an emotionally intelligent life,(with,of course, varying degrees of success) so I think that EQ impacts everything that Galba Bright & Associates does.It certainly influences:

1)how the company has recruited employees in the past.(communicate the company’s purpose as simply and clearly as possible, look for people whose values are aligned with this purpose, have a series of in depth conversations about values as part of the hiring process).
2)the identification of the company’s preferred clients (identify purpose-driven individuals who have a good sense of their strengths and weaknesses who are seeking a valuable learning experience).

3)approach to information sharing and learning.(provide information to empower and educate as a platform for providing valuable learning experiences).

Those are activities. Ultimately, the story is really told through the impact of EQ on the company’s clients
There are some brief stories about the impact of EQ in other organisations in the first and third issues of the Tools for Transformation Newsletter™, January’s BrightIdeas™ presentation has a success story from one of the company’s hospitality sector clients. I plan to write more stories in the future.

Your point about “community” is very thought provoking. It could be “a community of one,” where EQ enables a person to live with authenticity and integrity, a geographically based community (eg,the physical neighbourhood that I live in) or a region (the world, the Caribbean, the Americas etc.) or a virtual community, like the Brain Based Community. EQ has the potential to have impact at these levels and I’m committed to helping people see and experience this.

Also, theres is a web page called “My Emotional Intelligence Story.” Perhaps you could read it and tell me if it raised any questions for you.
