If you have already read my first post on this topic, you may have noticed that I didn’t give you a real world example of naturalistic intelligence. If you haven’t read the first post, I suggest that you read that post first and then come back to this one.

Here is an excellent naturalistic intelligence resource.

Leslie Owen Wilson explains:

“People possessing nature smarts are keenly aware of their surroundings and changes in their environment, even if these changes are at minute or subtle levels. Often this is due to their highly-developed levels of sensory perception.”

If you want to increase your Emotional Intelligence, it’s important that you understand the basics of multiple intelligence for two key reasons

1) your awareness of each of the different types of intelligence gives you a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.

2) when you improve your knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses, you improve your intrapersonal intelligence (your capacity for being smart about yourself).

Intrapersonal intelligence belongs in the foundation set of emotional intelligence competencies called self awareness.

Experts argue that anyone who wants to improve their Emotional Intelligence should start by improving their self awareness.

What’s Next?

How do you feel when you use your naturalistic intelligence?

Can you think of a famous person in history who demonstrated high levels of intrapersonal intelligence?

Hi Galba, it is so true that as we learn our personal gifts and talents in all of our intelligences we can find ways to strengthen any that are weak and at the same time to take our gifts to the stars! But it begins with a personal assessment.

A person I find who shows high areas of intrapersonal intelligence is Mother Theresa. She was so strong inside that she could avoid letting criticisms take her down and live to her spiritual calling. Another person, who currently is intrapersonally intelligent is Oprah Winfrey. She also works for the good of others, but that begins within. Thoughts?

mmm that’s a good one Robyn.

Nelson Mandela must have drawn on some amazing inner resources to return from incarceration to lead South Africa.

I think Curtis Mayfield dug very deep to produce beautiful music after having been paralysed after a lighting rig fell on him during a concert. After that, he produced on of the finest and most loving CDs I’ve ever heard, called New World Order. It’s a great wake up call for me to listen to it if I’m ever feeling sorry for myself.

Intrapersonal intelligence is a funny phenomenon. You can’t spot people who have it just by their appearance, I think you can only discern it by the impact that a person who has that strength has on others. By contrast it’s easy to identify a person who is lacking in intrapersonal intelligence.
