Galba Bright’s 7 Laws of Emotional Intelligence : Law #1

How to avoid an EQ overload
There are probably thousands of books about Emotional Intelligence and I suspect you’re too busy to read them all. Would you like me to share my understanding of the essence of Emotional Intelligence with you in short series of posts?

Yes?
Great!! Let’s get going.

Galba Bright’s 7 Laws of Emotional Intelligence.

Law #1: I am responsible for my own feelings

Uncontrollable emotions are dangerous

A taxi-driver in Jamaica once told me an unforgettable story of how, after he broke up with his girlfriend, he drove through a series of red traffic lights on a major highway.

He’d been overpowered by his emotions and acted automatically. Mercifully he lived to tell me the story and, miraculously, no-one was injured.

As we chatted, it was clear that the taxi-driver’s self control had snapped. He hadn’t taken responsibility for how he was feeling. Could you ever imagine yourself driving in this way?

Probably not.

Yet do you manage your emotions perfectly? I know that I certainly don’t.

How does this Law make you feel?

Law #1 is both an opportunity and a challenge. It’s an opportunity, because if, you live by this principle, you’ll understand that you are a powerful person. You’ll see a vivid picture of the person that you can become. As you become emotionally committed to this picture, your journey of transformation will accelerate.

This Law can also be a horrifying challenge. Once you’re no longer able to blame other people for how you feel, you won’t be able to escape the burden of your personal responsibility.

The Law in practice

The key to practicing this Law is to be conscious of how you are feeling. Your self awareness is a precious resource. Deep breathing, counting to 10 and taking a break are examples of helpful ways to help you maintain your self awareness.

Are you ready for the challenge?

What are the risks?

How will you benefit when you accept this challenge?

Are you ready for Law #2?

Q.1 I have already taken on the challenge.

Q.2 The risks included- (i)accepting that I am the mistress of all my actions whether they be good or bad. After all we were cultured to be finger pointers.

    (ii) losing self-denial
    (iii) losing unconsciousness
    (iv) losing insanity

Q3. I will become aware of my true-self, my true potentials and awake the inner woman which is who I really am.

I will stop the blaming others of others for my misfortunes instead I will acknowlegde that my every action results in a reaction. In other words I am repeaping what I have sown, nourished and cherished each moment of my unconscious living. I will be more intuned with reality and be a positive player thus influencing the positive vibration network of human existence.

    Wow Tanika !

Thanks for your insights. Can I ask, has life remained the same for you since you took on he challenge, or has it changed?

Regarding Law # 1, I actually do practice that. I know that I am experiencing certain emotions because I put the pressure on myself or have unreal expectations that I feel everybody else should subscribe to or I knew that if I act in certain ways, I would pay with certain emotions. The trick here for me is to break my bad habits of doing what I know is not healthy and caused by my only actions and change my behavior.

At the same time, I realize that emotional stress is the worst. So, I am working on how to control that beast and my own favoritism of emotional context.

A resounding YES. Things could never remain the same. Let me tell you this, here is the power avested by the method of repetition. Whether one likes it or not whatever is taped into the memory box automatically works wonders. This is the actual igniting of one’s sub-conscious-mind. You are actually thinking about some thing and actually transforming one’s feelings, thoughts and actions without much effort. Since once the mind is programmed everything will naturally takes its course.

Simply take time to be by oneself and reflect. Then tell the mind what it ought to manifest.

    Hello Tanika:

Thanks for your response and your insights. I really enjoy the way that you are able to clearly describe your thought processes. It seems that you have studied how your mind works and reached some meaningful conclusions.

I certainly agree with you that reflection is a powerful tool.

Can I ask you. Do you feel that there are any disadvantages to being reflective?
