Galba Bright’s 7 Laws of Emotional Intelligence : Law #3

Law # 3 I always have choices about how I respond to situations, events and people.

Short and sweet

When we harness our self awareness we remain in touch with how we feel. We manage ourselves and direct our behaviour by channelling our emotions.

This Law follows logically once you make a habit of living according the Law #1 and Law #2.

How will it feel when you consistently practice Law #3?

Law #4 follows.

Today, I chose to respond differently to a situation that usually makes me very mad and stressed out -when my computer at work does not work: I have no access to email, current files and time is ticking…so, I used to inflate a panic self-talk inside myself that I am going to lose something if I do not get back online and of course that always reflected in my voice when I talked to the IT person. Today, I changed my habit, instead of “getting mad”, I looked at the situation as an opportunity to read up on the web tips for my other project ( a book I bought and parked at my desk for a month) and plan my next steps, while waiting patiently and even smiling at the IT guy who probably expected my “other” side. The result = I had no negative emotions and extra stress and I even forgot about the incident and got insipred from the readings. Makes a difference and works!

    Hello Yulia:

What an interesting and inspiring story :). I really love the visual image of you “inflating a panic self-talk”. Can I ask, what influenced you to choose a different reaction?

This law opened my mind to always seek alternative ways as to how I should handle difficult situations. As often as I repeat these laws this is the one that has currently taken the spotlight. I have long been challenged with the reality that my present job will not help me to fully be whom am meant to be. This law has truly helped me to specifically seek options and I have inwardly now taken one of the choices. So one needs to realise that there is never one way to handle situations. This law awakens the characteristic of versatility, whilst being calm in oneself.
