“Beyond The Hype” New EQ and Project Management Article

Does EQ lead to project management success?

Emotional Intelligence sounds good in theory, but can project managers really use it to get ahead?

Business writer Sarah Fister Gale poses this question at the beginning of her article, Beyond The Hype for the April 2007 edition of Project Management magazine.

My disclosure

Sarah interviewed me as part of this article and quoted me. I’ve tried to stand back from my involvement and assess whether the article offers you value.

An overview of the article

In four pages, Sarah describes the role of Emotional Intelligence assessments. She then provides basic information about emotions and how they affect project management.

The author then discusses how training, coaching and support from others can help people to improve their Emotional Intelligence. Her articles includes an interesting 8 point quiz by
Anthony Mersino, the author of Emotional Intelligence for Project Managers: The People Skills You Need to Achieve Outstanding Results. You can use it to get a quick insight into how well you manage your emotions when you are managing projects.

Sarah then tops off her article with two interesting personal stories from real people who successfully improved their emotional intelligence. She profiles Anthony Mersino, PMP and Valerie Jachimowicz , PMP in this section.

I liked Sarah’s balanced approach to Emotional Intelligence. She treated it as a credible concept. She did not, however, present it as a cure all for the challenges that project managers face.

Perhaps Sarah’s even handed approach might frustrate those readers who are eagerly searching for a definitive approach to how to improve their Emotional Intelligence.

Hoewever, if you’re interested in becoming more effective at managing projects, I believe that this article will give you useful insights and information. You can download it here.

I also recommend Sarah’s first article on Project Management and Emotional Intelligence for the same magazine. It’s called “The Secret of Stellar Managers.” If you are a certified PMP project manager you can get the article at no cost by going to http://www.pmi.org. If you’re not certified, you can follow the links and pay for the article.

Galba, great post and a great article (Beyond the Hype). I was thrilled to be included in that article with you.

One thing that struck me about the article was your statement about training and that “everyone’s emotional intelligence needs are different and what you need to do to enhance your emotional intelligence depends on where they are”. That idea really resonated with me. I am quite busy with a consulting engagement but as soon as I get some time, I want to explore this further with you to better understand:
    1) How do we determine where people are?
    2) Based on where they are, how do we determine their EQ potential?
    3) What are the stregths and weaknesses of the tools (training, coaching, books) that we as practioners use to help people to achieve their EQ potential?

These are timely questions for me as I am in the process of conducting workshops and I wonder what the limits are for training.

In any case, I will explore this further on my blog and link back here for your comments.

Great job Galba, keep it up!
    Anthony
