Obsession or Passion Meme

May 2nd, 2007 by Galba Bright

I’m going off topic to respond to Robyn McMaster’s meme where she invited me to identify 5 things that I’m obsessive or passionate about.

The first search result on Google for the definition of an obsession was:

in psychical research, obsession is an invasion of the living by a discarnate spirit, tending to a complete displacement of normal personality for purposes of selfish gratification which is more or less permanent.

I don’t think I’ll go there. Instead, I’ll follow in Robyn’s wise footsteps.

West Indies Cricket
Still a passionate supporter after 40 odd years. The glory days of the 80s and the early 90s were great. A suporter is a supporter, come what may. Anyway the current predicament is giving me a great chance to develop my resilience, which we know is a key EQ competency.

Spoken Word Radio
I’ve always enjoyed painting pictures in my mind whilst listening. I used to make up my own radio shows when I was young. Radio can be a very powerful educative force, especially in oral societies. Now that I appear on the radio from time to time perhaps my passion has come full circle.

Change/Transformation
I’m stubborn, yet I can change when I’m ready. As I tried to understand myself better it sparked my deep interest in how and why people change. That has driven much of my consulting career.

Novelty
When I was employed every professional job I ever had was new. Now I’m self employed every assignment is different. New challenges bring out the best in me and bring me fulfillment. I try to live an emotionally intelligent life. EQ is more than a nice concept, it is a throughly practical set of competencies. I fall down every day and I get back up. Trying to live in harmony with my core values is extremely important to me.

Writing/Blogging
I will simply sat that I find it very fulfilling.

Thanks Robyn. I’d like to offer this meme invite to Chris Garrett, who designed this blogJim Walton, Ed Brenegar, Anthony Mersino and Linda Zdanowicz

Hi Galba, what fun to learn that you love cricket, spoken word radio and blogging. Did you play cricket at one time? What do you love most about that sport?

    Hello Robyn:

I used to bat left handed and bowl leg breaks right handed. I was very moderate and very keen and stopped playing in my twenties. The first series that I can remember is the 1966 West Indies tour of England. Test Match cricket unfolds as a drama and every day there is a compelling story, irrespective of what goes on. It’s great to watch a day and how it unfolds. In the Caribbean the history of cricket tells you so much about the society, past present and future. The atmosphere at a major Caribbean cricket ground is unique. If you are interested to read more C.L.R. James classic “Beyond A Boundary” is a great read. My favourite cricketer of all time is Sir Vivian Richards. He was a master player, he understood what cricket meant to Caribbean people and he had a strong mind. EQ is everywhere :). The current Australian team is exceptional, talented, focussed and goal oriented. Robyn, do you know anyone who has been involved in helping deliver the Australian team’s development plan?

Hi Galba, thanks for tagging me, what fun! I cheated though, I had more than 5 and obviously no self-discipline. One great thing, at first I thought I’d have to wrack my brain to come up with 5 and once I got started I couldn’t stop. I could have kept going for a long time yet. I guess that’s why gratitude journals are such a good idea. BTW, I love your acknowledgment and awareness of novelty. That keeps everything interesting, doesn’t it. Thanks, Galba.
    Linda

    Galba,
Thanks for the nudge. It was a good exercise in reflection. As a result, I decided to do 5 professional passions and 5 personal passions. Here’s the link.

Hello Linda: Thanks for the link.

Hello Ed: Your 2 sets of 5 kick started my mind, so I’ve written a reflection on your reflection :)
