Tune Up Your EQ

I asked you this question:

Is EQ a radical new idea, or is it simply old wine in new bottles?

Tanika Williams’ answer prompted me to ask:

Is EQ old or new?

Ray Hobby followed up with a detailed comment. He concluded:

“EQ is, in fact and deed, very old ! What is new is our determination to find out why it IS so important
…and long may it be so !”

Here’s Ray’ comment in full:

“I think it is fair to say that everyone has ‘intelligence’ to some degree or other, but due to our intelligence we have wanted to know more about ‘the form’ and ‘make-up’ of that intelligence.”

“Tanika is quite right to say “…our modern cultures have moved us away from simplicity.” but if we want to know more and more about less and less [ie we want to have an in-depth understanding of what we are about] then that is the price we have to pay.”

“For simplicity’s sake, however, we do well not to lose the reasons for that study and the root of our original thinking […just in case we go into a tangential cul-de-sac and have to take a step back to enable us to return to productive and progressional thinking].”

“In this case, Howard Gardner’s study into our Multiple Intelligences has served to illustrate that our intelligence is multi-faceted and has some 8 forms […and maybe more].In fact, MENSA ‘tests’ for potential membership using about 2 and a half intelligences [literal, numerical and a bit of spatial] and this may […?] be looked upon as intellectual intelligence. At the other end […?], assuming it to be linear […and it’s not] we have Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Intelligences which make up our Emotional Intelligence.”

“A Google-look at MI (Multiple Intelligence) fills in the gaps and makes stimulating reading …and offers substantiating thinking.
Just as Galba’s 7 Laws if EI are re-entrant so are the Multiple Intelligences. As we live our life we tend to draw upon our wit to serve us well [hopefully] and so pluck what we need from wherever …a bit like an orchestral conductor.”

“In that sense, our first violin [our natural predominant trait] may be numerical/ mathematical or the super-carer of other people or whatever.”
“That’s why our population is so rich …we are all different, if only a bit.”

So, to answer […?] the question -
EQ is, in fact and deed, very old ! What is new is our determination to find out why it IS so important
…and long may it be so !

Thanks Ray.

Tanika’s, Ray’s and other readers’ comments shouldn’t be buried in the comment section. They deserve the “front page” treatment (not quite the same as top story on CNN I know ;) ) because they encourage us to consider a topic from another angle and prompt us to continue to learn.

If you post a comment that fulfills these requirements, I’ll ask for your permission to post your comment and I’ll post it, provided it isn’t indecent, lewd, offensive etc.

So, one more time is EQ Old or New?
