A Deeper Look At The 7th EQ Law

Tune Up Your EQ

Tanika Williams Seized The Initiative
Me and My EQ Series contributor Tanika Williams sparked an interesting conversation when she suggested I change to 7th Law from:

“I can learn and practice new and more effective behaviours”:

to:

“I will learn and practice new and more effective behaviours.”

4 Heads Are Better Than One

MT of Mind Tweaks suggested that I could update the Law by making it an affirmation by changing it to

“I learn and practice new and more effective behaviours.”

Ray Hobby observed that the 7 Laws are interrelated and gave several ideas about how you can make your EQ work for you.

Ray, Tanika and myself continued to swap notes about effective ways to apply Emotional Intelligence in the real world.

They made some great points, including;

1) why you must always consider yiour actions, rather than act automatically
2) how to live by practicing simple precepts
3) how you can learn through repetition

If you want to get a handle on the essence of Emotional Intelligence, you really should read the comments they made at the 7th Law of Emotional Intelligence:Should We Change It? post.

Should I Change The 7th Law?

You’ve got until the end of 4th July to have your say, then I’ll decide whether and how to change Galba Bright’s 7th Law of Emotional Intelligence. If you’re new to these principles, or if you want a refresher, here they are.

Law #1: I am responsible for my own feelings.
Law #2: I am responsible for my own behaviour
Law #3: I always have choices about how I respond to situations, events and people.
Law #4: No-one can make me upset, angry, happy etc.
Law #5: Identifying my choices empowers me to take fresh look at my behaviour.

Law # 6: Recognising my range of choices is an excellent way to start changing my behaviour for the better.
Law# 7: I can practice and learn new and more effective behaviours.

I’ve been letting this sort of marinate in my brain for a while, and now? I think your original wording of “I can….” serves the intent best. It suggests a choice, and that, to me, reinforces the idea of the responsibility in 1&2. (someone else, Ray maybe, mentioned this before I think)

Thanks for your update MT. Perhaps the exercise encourages us to look at the totality of the 7 Laws, as well as each element.
