Are You Sabotaged By Your IQ?
September 24th, 2007 by Galba Bright“The rules for work are changing. We’re being judged by a new yardstick: not just by how smart we are, or by our training and expertise, but also by how well we handle ourselves and each other.”
“Working With Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman.
Happy Days
Were top of your class at school?
If not, can you remember who was?
Did being top of the class make the talented tot successsful in life?
Why Should IQ Tests Determine Life Outcomes ?
In the early 1960s in England, IQ, and the Holy Grail, the 11 plus exams, sorted those who soared and went to grammar school from those who scuffled off to the local comprehensive shool. My parents made a noble sacrifice by sending a four year old waif to a tiny school in a house in the London suburbs, about four miles away from the World famous Wembley football Stadium. Twenty of us crammed into the tiny house and the adjoining hut.
An Unusual School
The school had an outstanding pass rate for the 11 plus.
It was an intellectual hot house.
We learned French at age seven and our formidable educator rewarded us with sixpence after school when we cunning bright sparks accurately explained the meaning of a long word that we “casually” slipped into our conversation. Everyone did mental arithmetic out loud on Friday morning, another chance for more sixpences.
Jean, A Picture of Academic Brilliance
I remember a fair haired little girl (we’ll call her Jean) who wore thick blue rimmed glasses. She got far more sixpences than the rest of us. Whilst every academic race that the rest of us ran was an exhausting marathon, Jean burned us off in a canter.
Jean was unusual.
She would chew the corners of he wooden desks and occasionally dig craters in the desk with a pen knife. She rarely wasted her words.
What Became of Jean?
I ofen wonder whether Jean’s unique mix of intellectual brilliance and unusual behaviour took her where she wanted to go, or did this heady mix lead to failure.
Did Jean become an accomplished scientist ?, is she now a loving (grand) mother ?, perhaps she owns a gas station?
Deep down, is Jean successful? is she happy?
IQ Tests: A Convenient Measure, But A Blunt Instrument
Increasingly we understand that we make a grave error when we rely on IQ to determine how successful a person will be in life. Emotional Intellignce gives you the tools you need to achieve success.
