Ellen Janssens from the Positive Communication Blog made a comment towards the end of the recent Essence of EQ series. I strongly recommend it you want to understand what you need to do to improve your emotional intelligence.

In the Essence of EQ series, 8 readers shared their insights about the fundamentals of EQ. If you didn’t follow the series, or if you want a refresher,

Download the Essence of Emotional Intelligence Presentation in pdf format.

Here’s the first part of Ellen’s comments:

“To me, the essence of EQ is knowing yourself. Knowing what it is you truly want, and what it is you can contribute to this world. Which will most probably be exactly the same thing…

When you are aware of what that is, or when you’re on the path of finding that out, the important aspects of EQ, like compassion, empathy, discipline, empowering and taking responsibility for your own life will be that much easier. “

1. Do you agree with Ellen?

2. How would you describe the essence of EQ?

I enjoy reading the comments at this blog. I’m happy to feature comment as blog articles. I’ll always check with you first to ensure that you’re comfortable with the idea.

Thanks so much Ellen. In part 2, Ellen goes a step further and describes the biggest barriers to emotional intelligence.

How we understand and express emotions is a very subjective and personal thing. Some people want things that they don’t perceive as contributions to the world, yet the efforts they exert to earn or achieve the things they want do reverberrate in the form of energy. Even though we don’t see emotions, we can perceive their vibrations and measure their effects in other ways. Whetehr or not you realize it, your choices affect your emotions and affect every other human being everywhere.

I agree. Asking yourself what you really want and what it is you can contribute to this world, that is the only way to find out about yourself. And if these are the same, there you have found your true balance. Not enough people seem to be asking themselves those questions - it is my strong belief that exactly asking yourself those 2 questions is key in trying to understand yourself and the world you are in. To me that is essential knowledge about your self - and without that knowledge it is useless - or a least futile - to try and ‘work’ on your EQ.

    Hello Jos:

Thank you for your comment. It seems to me that we make the world a better place by working on knowing ourselves. Can I ask you Jos, what do you feel is the best way to persuade a person to work on his/her EQ?

Hi there, this is a good insight on understanding EQ and emotional intelligence.

Just a note to let you know that, I’ve added you to my list of tags to join in Alex Shalman’s “Caring Compassion Charity”. The idea is for you to write about something you’re passionate about. You would link to me and I would link back to the originator. It’s a good way to build networking. Hello Galba,

To be honest, I am a sceptic when it comes to trying and persuade a person to ‘work’ on his/her EQ. I don’t even believe that the mere ‘paying attention to the EQ’ in itself is of any use… And I do not mean that in any cynical way.

It is my belief that the only way a person can ‘improve’ on what is called ‘EQ’ is by asking these two questions continuously: “Who Am I?” and “What can I contribute to the world?”.

Knowledge about ’self’ is - in my view - essential in trying to be a truly balanced person and valuable to others; that is where it all starts. And knowledge about ’self’, in turn, starts with knowledge about the world, about people, about life.

    Hello Jos:

Thanks so much for your comment. I enjoy your insight about the interplay between the individual self and the global world.

I think that the two questions that you pose are vital, provided of course, that one does something sensible with the answers :) I appreciate your contribution to this conversation.
