How To Make 2008 Your Best Year Ever - 22 Energizing Emotional Intelligence Tips

Albert Einstein warned you that narrow thinking won’t deliver the results that you crave:

“The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.”

With 2008 looming, will you simply set some New Years resolutions in the same old way?

How will you feel as they unravel, like an old, frayed sweater?

Let’s make 2008 your best year ever. Here are 22 Emotional Intelligence tips to kick start your thinking.

Begin With The End In Mind

1. Reflect on your experiences during 2007.
Carve out precious private time for this activity.

2. Don’t label your experiences “good” or “bad.”
Learn from everything that happened

3. Know what you want Get clear about what “success” means to you.

4. Choose 2 or 3 simple themes for 2008.Use them guide your goal-setting. Keep them as short as possible. I had two one-word themes for 2007. They’ve served me very well.

5. Set yourself monthly and quarterly goals Cover the key areas of your life. My critical areas are spiritual, family, health, professional and intellectual.

6. Keep your goals to yourself . Share them only with those who need to know them. Broadcasting your intentions is a waste of your valuable time. It also drains your energy.

7. Keep your to-do list in perspective. It’s only a list, not a map. Don’t confuse your fundamental direction with a mere list of tasks.

Keep On Moving

8. Review your progess against your goals. Do this at the end of each month and quarter.

9. Forgive your “enemies.” ….Then move on.

10. Write a daily gratitude journal. It will transform how you think and behave.

11. Review your journal every week. Act on the lessons that you learn.

12. Avoid negative thinkers. They won’t make your 2008 great. Remember the frayed sweater?

13. Listen closely to people who think and act positively. Exchange ideas and approaches with them. Together, you can achieve more.

14. Give generously …..without expecting a reward.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

15. Solve your problems while you’re asleep. Last thing at night, ask yourself a question about a problem and expect an answer when you wake up.

Priscilla Palmer did just that. That’s how she kick started the awesome Personal Development List

16. Keep your long term goals visible. Post them where you can see them. Your subconscious mind is very playful. It will propel you towards your goals, even when you’re not aware. How cool is that?

17. Stay flexible. Take advantage of unexpected ways to achieve your goals.

18. Break work tasks into smaller chunks. Wherever possible, work in 20 - 30 minute segments. Take a break and return energised.

19. Stop multi-tasking. You may feel heroic, but it’s grossly ineffficient.

20. Sip ice water throughout your work day. Clear your brain. Improve your focus and become more effective.

21. Programme your mind Smile at yourself in the mirror before you go to work. You can handle everything that comes your way.

22. Be persistent. Get clear about your themes and goals and you’ll find the energy to keep going, no matter what.

To Sum Up

As usual, excellent post Galba. Very timely too, because January is a bit late to plan for 2008 goals.

19 - Stop multitasking: Goes against what I’ve been taught, but I think there’s some truth here about it ultimately being inefficient.

I like your reference to the frayed sweater. It will by my anti-theme for the new year. Thank you for that!

    Hello Al:

Multi-tasking is an interesting issue. In 2001, the respected medical journal, Neuroimage found that workers who tried to do to many things at once and switch frequently between many tasks reduced their productivit by between 29% To 53%. The world of work gets more and more hectic, so it becomes harder for us to focus on one thing at a time. The rewards when you focus are clear, so the key is to sell yourself on the benefits and find little, practical ways that you can develop this habit. A book that I recommend in my free(online) Tune Up Your Emotional Intelligence Workbook is Get Out Of Your Own Way by Robert K. Cooper.

I like your idea about the anti-theme. It can be useful to be clear about what one is against, as well as what one is favour of. I appreciate your compliment about the article. Your feedback certainly spurs me on. Thank you.

Galba, what a fine list of traits that add wisdom to an ordinary day. My favorite is the reminder to listen closely to people who think and act positively. Better still be that person and listen too:-) Thanks for the inspiration Galba, you always add value to an ordinary day.

Galba, thanks for inviting me to consider your 22 energizing emotional intelligence tips. The one I’d like to tackle is to stop multi-tasking so that I can put more concentration into creative projects. And secondly I’m also taking time to relax and be good to me because I’m generally hard on myself. ;-)

Thank you for an excellent new year suggestion, Galba.
What I would suggest is that if anyone wishes to add a tip to the list, it should be good enough to warrant removing an item. Otherwise, if the list gets too long, it is a setup for not using it–another failed New Year’s resolution…
    Peace and wonder,
    CG

    Hello Scott:

Thanks for stopping by and for offering your “oomph” tip. I’ll review the list before the year is out and decide whether to update the list. Fundamentally your “just do it” notion underlies every tip because they’re no good sitting on a piece of paper. A person has to act on them.

    Hello CG:

Thanks for your suggestion. It does make sense to keep the list to manageable proportions. I’ll review it towards the end of the year and decide whther to revise it, based on the feedback on the blog and by email.

There are a lot of challenges in reducing multitasking, yet there are also many benefits. I wish you the best with your efforts. Do stop by again and share how you are progressing.

Here it is the first day of the new year, and I’m just beginning to really think about it. Your tips are very helpful in reminding me and others of the importance of staying committed and never giving up.
I look forward to a great 2008. I wish the best and more for you.
