How To Successfully Sell Your Expertise With Empathy

February 6th, 2008 by Galba Bright

Hands up if you’ve heard of Bob Marley. Reggae music made Jamaica a worldwide brand. How many other small islands are as well known? What has this got to do with selling and empathy? you ask.

Everything. Let me show you.

In 2000, a legendary reggae music retailer applied for a kiosk to sell reggae music CDs and DVDs at the Sangster International Airport departure lounge in Montego Bay. The competition for space was intense.

The airport managers rejected Tad’s application.

Disappointed, but not disheartened, Tad was convinced that his idea could work. He continued to nurture his concept.

Another Opportunity

In December 2003, MBJ Airports Limited invited new bids for kiosks. The newly appointed operators of the airport had ambitious plans. They would transform the airport into a world class facility and they needed world class retailers to make this happen.

Tad knew that thousands of businesses would apply. He also believed that he would succeed.

This time, he looked for help. He was referred to a consultant. When they met, Tad enthusiastically unfolded his bold vision. Retailers weren’t selling reggae music to tourists in a modern, accessible and friendly way. He knew what they needed.

Tad announced:

“Tads International will delight travellers by transforming their experience of reggae music in Jamaica.”

The retailer and the consultant agreed to work together.

Initial Apathy

The first challenge Tad faced was that he wasn’t even on MBJ’s radar. “Tad who?” was their response to his request for an initial meeting.

Yet he stuck with his plan.

He and the consultant eventually got the precious meeting (or was it airplay ;) The MBJ staff asked Tad several questions. Gradually the aiport manager’s scepticism began to fade. Tad remained confident.

MBJ asked him to produce a written outline proposal. They’d then decide whether to invite him to submit a formal application. Tad elaborated his ideas and the consultant produced a concept document.

Now MBJ was interested. They asked Tad Dawkins to submit a business plan. He conceptualised his Ultimate Reggae Experience.

The consultant crunched the numbers.

But they didn’t stop there. First they showed MBJ what the kiosk would look like:

Then they showcased Tad’s musical prowess. The consultant summarised the business plan and turned it into a slideshow.

He added some of Tad’s music and burnt it to a CD. The CD would play automatically once it was loaded into a PC. It would play 3 times and then stop.

MBJ awarded Tads International Limited a three year licence in July 2004. The company commenced business in October 2004.

Another Challenge

In 2006 MBJ announced a new bidding round. The company would dismantle the kiosks. Tad would have to win another competitive bidding round or close his business.

He was bullish. Tad had a track record of success with MBJ. Again, he worked with the consultant.

His resilience was rewarded the day before New Years Eve of 2006. The airport managers awarded his company a six year lease as the airport’s official retailer of reggae music CDs and DVDS. Celebrating his success, Tad Dawkins said:

“I’m delighted. I always knew my concept was a winner and I never lost heart, despite the challenges along the way.”

Tad wasn’t finished yet.

He used the shop as the platform for a thriving reggae music e-commerce venture and he’s taken advantage of technological developments to start his own production company.

5 Emotional Intelligence Lessons From Tad Dawkins

1. Tad has a high level of self-awareness. He knows his strengths and he plays to them. He knows his weaknesses and he gets expert help him get achieve great results.

2. He is extremely observant. Tad listens carefully to people before he seeks to persuade. Tad possessed the insight to present his business proposition in a way that fully met MBJ’s requirements. He stood in their shoes and adopted their point of view, not his own.

3. Tad is a very influential salesman because he actively looks for win-win relationships.

4. He doesn’t use hard sell tactics.

5. Tad has used his emotional intelligence, especially his empathy to successfully sell reggae music. He’s developed an influential brand.

Tad Dawkins gave me permission to publish his story.

Today, 6th February, is the 63rd anniversary of Bob Marley’s birth. February is Reggae Month in Jamaica.

I’m curious. Do you successfully sell your expertise by demonstrating empathy?

Is emotional intelligence just a set of academic concepts, or is it a resource you can use to power your way to business success?

Galba, I am deeply inspired by Tad’s talents and by the way you held them up to the raibow here for this wonderful series. Thanks!

The timing is perfect, Galba, as Robyn and I are headed out to a big University in MI to lead a two day conference on MITA for faculty and leaders.

Here’s my question as we leave for the airport - If you were to open a day long conference Galba, to help leaders use their brains in new ways - how would you open with empathy?

What would be your (or Tad’s) opening line? That is what I am thinking of as I read this compelling post! Thoughts?

    Hello Ellen:

I’m glad to know that Tad inspired you. He used to operate a shop in Brooklyn, New York and he has an office in Miami.

Ellen, your question is an interesting one. I feel that my question would be: “how do you feel?” Feelings and emotions are fundamental, so if people get in touch with how they feel, the previously impossible becomes quite doable. (indeed that’s what happened with Tad).

I usually ask participants this question in an exercise that I call the “check in.” That’s my quick answer. I don’t want you to miss your flight :) It’s a great question and I’ll write more about this in an article next week. Have a great conference.

Hello Ellen, thanks to Galba I have found you! I am thrilled! I am a previous business owner (sold my business a couple of years ago) and a current student at a local university. I have been doing a great deal of research on Emotional IQ and how to effectively train and teach it with great passion. I spend a lot of time exploring Galba’s information and truly believe he is an expert on Emotional IQ! I have been in the health care industry for my entire career and have been fortunate enough to have had many wonderful mentors who fertilized my Emotional IQ and allowed it to blossom with tremendous creativity. In the business I have built in the past, they were all built on the concepts of the Emotional IQ, I just didn’t quite realize that it was acknowledged as such. Now, I hope to become a part of a community so gifted and talented beyond belief. It is not my intent to ramble, I just wanted to introduce myself, I tried to do so on your site without success. Also, I noticed that you and Robyn are presenting at the U of M this weekend. Ann Arbor is one town away from me! Is there anyway possible, I can witness even a portion of your presentation? Normally I am not the type of person that would even consider asking this of someone because I would feel it too intrusive, however, I am so eager to learn and I believe I stumbled upon this posting for a reason and the timing is definately there, so I mustered up the nerve and I come to you with an open and excited mind, spirit and soul! If not, I understand entirely and graciously accept the fact that the timing was not right for you. Please also keep in mind, that I would welcome any kind of interaction with you during your visit if at all possible. If not now, then whenever the time is right for you. In the meantime to you, Robyn, Galba, the women behind 6 Seconds and so many others, I thank you for bring such tremendous credibility to an incredibly important shift in how we think about business, communication and life in general. I look forward to the opportunity to learn from all of you! Thank you for your time and consideration! Enjoy our lovely state of Michigan, Ann Arbor is an amazing town and one I am sure you will both enjoy!

    Hello Ellen:

I’m glad to know that your conference went well. It’s great that Tune up your EQ helped to connect Carrie and yourself. I’d love to know what your empathy building opener was. I followed the suggestion that I made to you on Tuesday. Look out for more on my answer early next week.

I am going to end the week thinking of your question: How do you feel?

It has sort of been taboo to ask that question. Say first day back at uni and I say to students: how do you feel? They want me to ask that but it may be regarded as a touch eccentric. I can hear it. s.. the way I feel, where are the handouts. The question, I suppose, is how to say it without embarassment on both sides.

Mulling the questions here, I think it is usually asked implicitly. How to ask it explicitly - that’s what I want to answer.

    Tips?

    Have a great weekend.

I agree, that the art is in exploring the issue in a way that people feel comfortable to answer. I’ll post my more detailed answer soon

    Hello Galba:

I am in great need of your advice regarding how to best utilize my EQ to approach a difficult situation. As you know, I have returned to school, I will not mention the name of the University because it is not my intent to bring it any more negative pubicity. However, this University, which is a smaller University is located in a town that offers a very diverse student body, for that I am thrilled. However, they have some real problems due to an extremely unfortunate circumstance that took place in one of the dorm room’s a year ago December. Long story short, a young women was murdered and the crime was not reported to the students or her parents for several days. After much investigation, they found that there was a lot of inappropriate and fraudulent behaivor on behalf of the President and a number of others on his administrative staff. This was unfortunately in the national news, the President and other staff members have been terminated, the poor family of the young victim has “settled” with the University and the University has been fined $350M for not following approppriate procedures and covering up a crime. I bring this to you because the morale of the staff is horrific, students who attend feel they do so out of “default” for the most part and the faculty seems to have given up! This brings me great distress. I have had and befriend some amazing talented and gifted Professors that I would have never encountered at a much larger University, I have met students that are half my age, but are very excited and interested in learning and I see the current position the University is in as an amazing opportunity to “carve out a unique niche” for itself, given the right leadership. Now, this is where I need your expertise. The University has selected a search firm and have appointed a committee to oversee the hiring of a New President. I have emailed the Board as well as the Student Body President, who is suppose to represent the student body, encouraging them to consider taking a different approach to whom they consider hiring and why. I have attached articles that pertain to similiar situations that provide creative input, I have tactfully and respectfully addressed them on numerous emails, however I have not received a response. They do send out blanket emails to the student body to update us on where the committee stands, when they met, if they are within their timeframe, but offer no information as to what type of person they are looking for, to my knowledge, do not solicit any feedback from students (besides the one that is supposedly representing us) and I would love to see them tap into some of the knowledge and request feedback from some of these Professors that have such great spirit and a tremendous love for teaching that they have endured all this mistretment. I did email the Secretary of the Board to see if they hold any open meetings and she was gracious and responded quickly. She mentioned that they hold open meetings but not any regarding the Presential Search for confidentiality reasons. Galba, I come to you with great frustration. I believe with all my heart that this small University is prime to position itself as an amazing institution, all through following the 4 basic steps in EQ. I am afraid we are going to start loosing some of the Professors, who have now become my friends and we (The Unviersity) will miss our chance to really turn things around. How would you approach the situation if you were me? What have I done that I could have done differently? As you know, I so treasure your feedback and expertise, so please anything you can offer me will be welcomed with an open mind and heart as always. Also, if there is anyone out there familiar with the politics of State run Universities, I encourage and welcome feedback as well. As always, I thank you for your time and kindness! Carrie
