What’s Your EQ/IQ Story?

Some see an IQ score as the definitive indicator of how successful a person will be in life. The higher your IQ, the greater your likely success. Many fans of EQ feel that emotional intelligence holds the key to achievement.

We all have an IQ score. We also have a level of emotional intelligence. How well do we understand how the two relate?

I hope this series will help you think about the connection between your IQ and EQ and how it affects how you live. You may want to answer one or more of the 5 questions. Feel free to leave your comments in the comment box below, or email me, using the contact form.

Download the entire series in pdf format now.

I will post the series in 7 additional articles.

Sidney Poitier’s 7 EQ Lessons, Part 1

July 10th, 2007 by Galba Bright

Tune Up Your EQ

I posted what I called an amazing clip of Sidney Poitier in Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? and I asked you what emotions you saw the actors portray. If you haven’t seen the video yet, why not have a look before you read on?

At our Learning Programme in Barbados, we came up with this list of emotions:

Sidney Poitier

Anger
Love
Passion
Empathy
Pride
Confidence

Sidney Poitier’s Father

Fear
Bitterness
Confusion
Hopelessness
Resentment
Despair
Isolation
Hurt

Do you agree with this list? What would you add or change? As you review this list, you are strengthening a key EQ capability, called Social Awareness, the ability to sense what other people are feeling.

What Was Amazing?

Jenny in Australia saw the clip throught the lens of my 7 Laws of Emotional Intelligence. She says that Sidney Poitier displayed the first five in the clip:

Law #1: I am responsible for my own feelings.
Law #2: I am responsible for my own behaviour
Law #3: I always have choices about how I respond to situations, events and people.
Law #4: No-one can make me upset, angry, happy etc.
Law #5: Identifying my choices empowers me to take fresh look at my behaviour.

Thanks for these insights Jenny, your comment gave me a new perspective.

Did the rest of you see it this way?

What I found amazing was how Sidney Poitier went through such a range of emotions in such a short time. If you look closely, they coincided with times when he got up and turned his back for example, with approximately, 2mins 44 seconds, 1min 55 seconds and 1 mins 24 seconds left, when as Jenny says:

“I reckon when he turns his back and has a smile and says ‘dad’ he has checked up on himself and made sure he killed off the agression building in his response”

Have a look at the intensity of the eye contact and focus that Sidney Poitier displays when he challenges his father. He certainly used his body to move us emotionally.

With about 1 min 15 seconds left, the director used his/hermusical intelligence and played music to dramatise Sidney Poitier’s profound shift in his emotions.

Did the Director succeed in bringing about a certain feeling in you?

This clip is all about Emotional Intelligence. Sidney Poitier, this amazing human being and fine actor has lots more to teach us.

In part 2 of this series, we’ll get Sidney Poitier’s insights into how his behaviour was shaped by EQ.

Will you join me for the remaining episodes of this 7 part series ?
