What Are The Pros and Cons of A High IQ?:Ray Hobby’s Story

February 22nd, 2008 by Galba Bright

In this series, Mensa member and Tune up your EQ reader, Ray Hobby explains why, despite having a high IQ, he is enthusiastic about emotional intelligence. In the third article in this 7 part series, Ray reveals the pros and cons of having a high IQ.

Pro’s –

” • recognising – and responsibly using - the assets mentioned in 2. above, as significant contributors to enable you to do something worthwhile.

• a reasonable expectation to be able cope with problems and difficulties that others may give up on.

• a confidence to genuinely help others …as they require to be helped.

• to inform and encourage others - as you require - to get things done.”

Con’s –

“• other people can have an impossible, even an unreasonably high expectation of your abilities …if they know of your high IQ.

• there may be a tendency to be arrogant and impatient with others who do not share a level or a speed of intellectual understanding.”

“For these reasons – both as Pro’s and of Con’s – it is often better simply to say nothing about your IQ test results or, indeed, about any of your inert abilities and attributes.”

“Consider the poor individual who says they can ‘do the splits’, for instance. Nobody believes them until they are actually seen ‘doing the splits’. “

“Now consider the dilemma of someone with a high IQ. Also remember especially – no one loves a smart-a***e and everyone takes great delight when that same person makes a mistake.”

“Enjoy the assets they afford and have real friends as associates…even those who ask you to write an article about - ‘Me and My High IQ’.”

Thanks, Ray. In the next article, Ray shares his tips for making the most of your IQ.

Some see an IQ score as the definitive indicator of how successful a person will be in life. The higher your IQ, the greater your likely success. Many fans of EQ feel that emotional intelligence holds the key to achievement.

We all have an IQ score. We also have a level of emotional intelligence. How well do we understand how the two relate?

I hope this series will help you think about the connection between your IQ and EQ and how it affects how you live. You may want to answer one or more of the 5 questions. Feel free to leave your comments in the comment box below, or email me, using the contact form.

“In that sense, our first violin [our natural predominant trait] may be numerical/ mathematical or the super-carer of other people or whatever. That’s why our population is so rich …we are all different, if only a bit.”
